SEO for Web 2.0: From Social Search to Perfect Search

Presentation by Marianne Sweeny, Ambient Insight Advisory Board

Seattle, WA November 7, 2008 -- Marianne Sweeny, an industry-recognized Search Engine Optimization (SEO) expert, presented "SEO for Web 2.0" at the 2008 Enterprise Search Summit West event. She highlighted current and emerging trends such as human-directed search and the growing use of mobile search.

In less than two decades, the science of Search has progressed from "ask your mother" (Search 0.0) through Search 1.0 ("the birth of relevance"), to Search 2.0, when search technology mirrors Web 2.0. Sweeny explains that Search 2.0 includes taking advantage of the Semantic Web and relationship modeling algorithms, harnessing collective human intelligence via “social search,” and delivering rich user experiences regardless of screen size.

"The most effective use of the social network phenomena is to remember that social networking is a behavior and not a tool," comments Sweeny.

In her presentation, Sweeny delivers specific advice to improve visibility of mobile Web content via mobile search optimization. Her recommendations range from adopting certain Web development techniques to encouraging user-generated content, which often includes location-specific terms and phrases.

"The Web is still hosted on the HyperTEXT Transfer Protocol and for as long as it stays there, text will rule when it comes to optimizing sites for search engine visibility. Considering the growing adoption of mobile devices, having a portion if not all of a site optimized for mobile display, further extends the return on investment for this important communication device," adds Sweeny.

Marianne Sweeny is on Ambient Insight’s Advisory Board, and she is the Director of Search Services for Ascentium, an interactive marketing and technology company with offices in Washington State, Oregon, Maryland, and the UK.
