  Overview:

There are lucrative revenue opportunities for Learning Services suppliers competing in the US corporate market. The US corporate demand for Learning Services is growing by a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.1% and will approach $10 billion by 2012. During the forecast period a growing percentage of this revenue will come from new buyers and this represents new revenue streams for suppliers. Yet tapping into these revenue streams is getting more complicated for suppliers.

US corporations are undergoing a process of decentralization and globalization. The supply chain is getting very complex and finding the buyer is becoming a challenge even for entrenched suppliers. The highest expenditures are still being made by enterprise buyers but the strongest demand for Learning Services is now coming from small and medium-sized (SMB) businesses in specific vertical industries. The current market is in a period of transition with new suppliers entering the market to meet the needs of these new buyers.

The market now favors innovative suppliers that are skilled at meeting the needs of non-enterprise vertical sector buyers. Suppliers that know the answer to the questions, “who is the new buyer?” and "what are they buying?" now have the advantage in the market. This report provides answers to those questions.

Key Findings:

The US corporate demand for Learning Services is growing by a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.1%. There are several major factors that are contributing to the demand for Learning Services including:

  • The decentralization and globalization of corporate buying organizations
  • Aggressive competition for enterprise and LORG buyers
  • The early signs of a "shake out" in an increasingly complex supply chain
  • Customer migration away from packaged products towards custom services
  • New revenue opportunities for open source product services
  • Falling profit margins in the enterprise
  • Grey market suppliers underbidding Learning Services suppliers

In general the top end of the market favors the global services suppliers but profit margins are eroding and suppliers have begun to compete solely on price. At the lower end of the market smaller regional and local suppliers are able to command higher prices based on the demand for vertical expertise.

Global services suppliers will generate lucrative revenues throughout the forecast period, but the smaller regional suppliers will have higher profit margins. There are very clear revenue opportunities for specific types of services and the market favors suppliers that can specialize in particular vertical sector needs or particular learning technologies.

Grey market suppliers are tapping into the demand for fast turnaround and low-cost services. It is quite common now for sales and marketing departments to purchase Learning Services from multimedia or Web-development firms that do not market themselves as learning providers. Regional and local suppliers believe they are competing with each other but their real competitors are the grey market suppliers.
